Launched in 2010 by French car manufacturer Citroen, the DS 3 is the supermini that was the first model to be announced as part of the DS range. DS had started out as a luxury sub-brand of Citroen a year earlier, and this new brand showcased the DS Inside concept car at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show. The Inside’s design went on to provide the inspiration for the DS 3.
This model was originally released under the name Citroen DS3 before DS Automobiles separated from Citroen and became a standalone brand in 2014. To mark the manufacturer’s move away from Citroen, the DS3 received a small facelift, introducing a new engine to mark the occasion. The 1.2-litre PureTech three-cylinder joined the existing 1.4 and 1.6-litre petrol engines.
In 2016, it was renamed DS 3, doing away with all Citroen branding and undergoing another, fuller facelift.
As well as its new name, the 2016 revamp of the DS 3 saw the model receive an updated design, with a new front grille named DS Wings. This is a vertical grille that includes a wing motif stretching up to the headlights and a chrome surround.
This second facelift also brought with it more engine options. A PureTech with 128bhp joined the line-up, along with two 1.6-litre BlueHDi diesel engines offering 99 and 118bhp.
In terms of tech, the 2014 facelift saw the introduction of a touchscreen sat nav and the 2016 facelift updated this tech with fresh software and graphics. It controls most of the DS 3’s systems and can provide smartphone connectivity, depending on trim level.
